The Valsörarna is an island group located in the narrowest point of the Gulf of Bothnia. The number of islands is a an approximation and ever growing because the land is rising from the sea at speed of roughly a centimeter per year. A team consisting of Altia’s and Chemigate’s production, development and procurement headed out to the islands from the nearby lying Björkö. While we hiked across the main island from Ebbskäret to Storskäret we partook in a lively discussion about new developments in proteins reduction in barley starch. We also had an interesting debate about the impact of continental European wheat and its impact on Finnish barley. During the hike we learnt about the fascinating history of the islands. We were also treated to a lesson in the surprisingly multifaceted flora of the rugged surroundings. The Valsörarna is a bird conservation area so landing on the island is restricted and camping is prohibited. In the summer cruises are organized to the islands.
